Shabbat is the heart of a Jewish journey. In Africa, it becomes something unforgettable — candlelight overlooking the savannah, Kabbalat Shabbat with lions in the distance, Havdalah under the Southern Cross.
Eruv & Accommodation
Where possible, an eruv is arranged around your camp or lodge. Rooms are selected for walkability and pre-paid electric keys arranged.
Tefillah & Texts
Siddurim, chumashim, and a sefer Torah (where coordinated in advance) are provided. Minyan can be arranged for larger groups.
Meals & Ceremony
Full Shabbat meals — challah, wine, three courses — prepared by your private chef. No cooking on Shabbat; food pre-prepared on a blech.
Game Drives
Friday game drives end by mid-afternoon. Shabbat is a day of rest — optional gentle walking within the eruv, no game drives.
Friday Night
Kabbalat Shabbat as the sun sets over the plains. Candlelight dinner, zemirot, and a sense of peace hard to find anywhere else.
Havdalah
Saturday night Havdalah under the African stars — spices, candle, and the start of a new week in the wild.
A Shabbat Timeline
Thursday
Chef begins Shabbat prep; eruv checked; rooms assigned.
Friday midday
Last game drive ends by 3pm; camp prepared for Shabbat.
Friday sunset
Candle lighting, Kabbalat Shabbat, seudah rishonah.
Saturday
Shacharit, seudah shlishit, day of rest — no driving.
Saturday night
Havdalah under the stars; new week begins.
