The Complete Kosher Safari Guide

Everything you need to know about luxury glatt kosher safaris in Africa

What Is a Kosher Safari?

A kosher safari is a tailor-made African wildlife experience where every meal, every lodge, and every detail is arranged according to Jewish dietary laws. Unlike regular safaris where kosher food is an afterthought, a dedicated kosher safari places glatt kosher cuisine, Shabbat observance, and Jewish values at the heart of the journey — without compromising on luxury, adventure, or wildlife.

Kosher Food on Safari

On an AfriKosher safari, a private kosher chef travels with you throughout your journey. All meat is glatt kosher, sourced from South Africa's established kosher suppliers in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Our chefs prepare fresh meals daily in dedicated kosher kitchens — whether in a luxury lodge, a tented camp in the Serengeti, or a private villa in the Seychelles.

We can accommodate all levels of observance: Chalav Yisrael, Pas Yisrael, Cholov Yisroel, and specific community standards (Badatz, OU, MK, etc.). For remote fly-in camps in Botswana or walking safaris in Zambia, our team flies in with all provisions — you'll never compromise on kashrut.

Typical meals include: sunrise breakfasts overlooking the savannah, gourmet picnic lunches on game drives, afternoon tea with freshly baked challah, and candlelit Shabbat dinners with fine South African wines.

Shabbat on Safari

Shabbat in the African wilderness is one of the most meaningful Jewish experiences imaginable. As the sun sets over the savannah, we pause. Game drives are suspended, candles are lit, and the pace of life shifts to something deeper.

Our team arranges everything: candle lighting with enough time before Shabbat, Friday night Kiddush with freshly baked challah, a full Shabbat dinner, Shabbat day meals, and a beautiful Havdalah ceremony as the first stars appear. For those who wish, we can arrange a Sefer Torah to be brought to your lodge for Shabbat morning services.

We carefully select lodges that allow for easy Shabbat observance — minimal electronic sensors, walkable grounds, and suites with manual keys or key cards that can be pre-arranged.

Where Can You Go?

AfriKosher operates across 9 African destinations, each offering a unique experience. South Africa combines Cape Town's cosmopolitan energy with world-class safari in Kruger. Tanzania delivers the Great Migration and the Ngorongoro Crater. Botswana offers the most exclusive, remote luxury in the Okavango Delta. Zambia and Zimbabwe showcase Victoria Falls. And for the ultimate safari-and-beach combination, we pair any safari with the Seychelles, Mauritius, or Zanzibar.

Every destination has been personally vetted by our team. We know exactly which lodges have suitable kitchen facilities, which camps allow for private chef arrangements, and which itineraries create the most seamless kosher experience.

Best Time for a Kosher Safari

The African safari calendar follows the seasons. The dry winter months (June–October) offer the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. This is also when the Great Migration river crossings occur in Tanzania and Kenya.

For South Africa, the Cape Town summer (November–March) is ideal for combining city, Winelands, and Garden Route exploration with safari. Botswana's peak season (July–October) delivers extraordinary wildlife in the Okavango Delta.

Yom Tov periods — Pesach (March/April) and Sukkot (September/October) — are popular times for kosher safaris. We recommend booking 12+ months ahead for these periods as our private chefs and premium lodges book out early.

Kosher Family Safaris

Travelling with children on safari is an extraordinary gift — and we make it seamless. Our family-friendly lodges offer interleading suites, private pools, and child-friendly menus. We arrange age-appropriate game drives (morning drives work best with young children), kids' cooking activities with the kosher chef, and special moments like junior ranger programmes.

For Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations, we create unforgettable ceremonies — reading from the Torah with the Serengeti as your backdrop, or beneath the stars of the Kalahari. These are the moments families talk about for generations.

Safety, Health & Practicalities

Your safety is our priority. All our guides are certified professionals, lodges are in secure private reserves, and we provide comprehensive pre-travel guidance on vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, and travel insurance. We recommend consulting a travel clinic 4–8 weeks before departure.

Most of our safari destinations are malaria-free or low-risk in the dry season. South Africa's Cape region, much of Namibia, and parts of the Seychelles and Mauritius are malaria-free. We provide detailed advice per destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a kosher safari?

We recommend 6–12 months, especially for peak season (July–September) and Yom Tov periods (Pesach, Sukkot). Premium kosher lodges and our dedicated chefs book out early.

Can you accommodate different kashrut standards?

Yes. We work with glatt mehadrin caterers and can accommodate Chalav Yisrael, Pas Yisrael, Badatz, OU, MK, and other community standards. Your private chef will follow your specific requirements.

Is it possible to do a kosher safari with young children?

Absolutely. We specialise in family kosher safaris with child-friendly lodges, age-appropriate activities, and flexible scheduling. We recommend a minimum age of 5–6 for open game drives.

What if we want to combine safari and beach?

Our safari-and-beach combinations are among our most popular. Pair the Serengeti with Zanzibar, Kruger with Mauritius, or the Okavango Delta with the Seychelles for the ultimate African experience.

How does kosher food work in remote camps?

Our chef flies in with all provisions. We have temperature-controlled containers for meat and dairy, sealed kosher meals for day trips, and established relationships with every lodge kitchen we use.
